Your Signs and Displays may be
illegal!
Are you in violation of T.O.B. codes?, Jun-13-2003, 7:23 PM

When it rains it pours! If
bad weather, cold, rain and economic pit falls has not been enough to
break the backs of small business owners we must all now reform our
display, signs, pennant location, building colors and who knows what,
to conform to what a group of civic association local leaders feel is
not an eyesore.
If your one of the business locations that has already been contacted
to remove signage, displays, pennants, flags, advertising signs etc.,
its ok to be angry. The solution to the situation however is to work
along with the Town Investigator within reason. Take a second look at
your displays, ask yourself do they look like clutter? Redesign your
displays behind your building line, keep them away from sidewalks and
beautify them like your ads paid for in local papers. Your location is
your showcase give it your best within reason.
Signs falling down, in need of paint or letter touch up? As soon as
the weather breaks fix them up! Again take a look at your location, if
you have one to many signs saying the same thing, eliminate the
duplicate sign unless it is a safety sign or signs required by the law.
Look at your location in the morning if you see signs nailed or tacked
to poles by your location remove them from the poles and throw them in
the trash! This will help the Town Investigator clean up these illegal
signs.
Planning on placing a portable sign for a sale, make sure you pay for
the proper permit before you rent the portable sign! Confirm the
amount of time you are permitted to have this type of sign on
location!
In the future if you are going to add a new sign call the Town
Investigator and secure the proper permit. This will elimate problems
later, saving your company time and money.
Daily in and out display be sure not to block walkways or driveways
and pack them away at closing until the next day.
The CDM Chamber of Commerce, Board of Directors strongly suggests that
every member that is visited by the New Town Investigator Mr.Pat
Campbell or his staff obtain his direct phone number and suggestions
how to comply within reason. If his request will cause financial
hardships, or you feel the request is unreasonable please take a
picture of the situation, write a letter to the CDM Board of Directors
about the situation and send a copy of the letter and picture to The
Miller Place Civic Association {attention Toni} and to the attention
of the Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, John Jay LaValle.
Calling the Chamber Office without a written letter of your situation
to follow is fruitless!
