Town of Brookhaven attacking business community!
Beware - Towns Senior Investigator issuing summons and fines!, May-04-2005, 9:30 AM
The economic development of the small business community struggling to rebound since the winter of 2004 were months of poor weather condition, rising fuel costs and other factors caused a general slow down of productivity is finding no support from the Town of Brookhaven. To the surprise of many small business people The Town of Brookhaven in place of assisting has launched a frontal assault on the business community sending their Senior Town Investigator and his troops to clean up all business frontages of displays, signs and items important for established business people to attract people to shop locally. There is no rime or reason other than The Town of Brookhaven seems to want to meet their budget demands by picking the pockets dry of local business people by imposing fines using town ordinances as never seen before. Attacking the tax base and infrastructure and economic development of local communities and causing unnecessary chaos is not why we elected people into government positions, we did elect officials to help ensure growth, productivity and future employment of our people, it seems officials have chosen a different path!

The CDM Chamber of Commerce covering the business corridor from Mt. Sinai to Rocky Point is receiving daily reports that members as well as non-members are seeking its intervention to assist in asking town officials to stop their disruptive and damaging attack. Many chamber directors being local merchants and residents of the area are not exempt from this attack, are asking members and non-members alike to make every attempt that is not damaging their business to meet the demands and than file a written complaint with the Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, Mr. John Jay LaValle sending a copy of their complaint to our office for review. Only if complaints are noted in writing, signed and on your company letterhead can your chamber officials seek a solution, if possible, with town officials.

If your business has unfortunately already received a summons and/or fines we strongly suggest you appear to answer. We suggest you don’t appear unprepared to argue you issues or just pay as another cost of doing business! The Senior Town Investigator has stated in many instances he has taken pictures of locations supporting his claims, we suggest you drive through Brookhaven and take pictures of thriving businesses’ and business corridors and log the same violations you have been fined and summoned to appear for, being overlooked. Big Box Stores and Large Car Dealerships displays their products and services on frontages, signs, banners, and other items you as a small business person have been targeted, harassed and possibly been issued a fine.

Is your business loosing clients after years of service because your display, on your property, is now a town code violation or now doesn’t meet a variance regulation, or other tactics being used by town investigators? Consider your small business may be, being singled out, because you don’t not have the funds or the legal team of the big box store, but you need to take a stand against goliath!

Let your Town Supervisor know what's going on!
