Business and Education team up for RPCAP students

It may surprise you knowing Long Islands largest export these days is not planes, trains, or manufactured goods; it is our most valuable resource for our future, our children! Our children, our future business, community and political leaders are forced to choose to leave Long Island their home when they finish high school or higher educational training in search of gainful employment and economical housing.

Business, parents, community and educational leaders involved in the Long Island Works-Rocky Point Career Advisory Partnership have teamed up, and geared up, to help students prepare in advance to find career opportunities here, at home, on Long Island. The Career Advisory Committee closing its second year held its 2nd Annual Road to Success Career Advisory Brunch at The Inn at East Winds on Wednesday, April 26, 2006.

Students that attended one of many business and educational workshops held throughout the school year at Rocky Point High School got to enjoy being actively apart of a real world, business opportunity conference. This year speakers talking to and with the students about career options and educational choices, their personal school to work experiences, and tips for finding that road to success were fantastic! Leading all in attendance and opening the career brunch with the pledge of allegiance was our 6th District Legislator Mr. Daniel Losquadro. Dan was raised in Wading River and attended Shoreham-Wading River High School. His support for our children’s and Long Island future is unwavering! Stepping up to the plate to bat for the students future were Mr. Italo Zanzi, Vice President International Broadcasting Sales & Latin American / US Hispanic Marketing for Major League Baseball. Mr. Zanzi born in Port Jefferson and was raised in Setauket hit a home run for the home team work-force building effort!

The home team line up of speakers continued with Mr. Raymond Perini past Assistant District Attorney, Past Chief Narcotics Bureau currently a criminal defense attorney. Representing small business and the field of promotional advertisement, RPCAP co-chairperson, Ms. Roseann Bufalino from Ad Ventures of Rocky Point! Health Technology & Management, Ms. Candace Golightly, clinical assistant professor in the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program at Stony Brook for 11 years. “If the video looks DAM good” Mr. Doug Morrow had something to do with it! Teaching Administrator department of Audio/Video/Film, Hofstra University and Writer/Producer for D.A.M. Video Inc.

Like Baseball, apple pie and the reaching the American dream of success for our children the team of volunteer experts students would meet, had to include the field of journalism. Representing the field of journalism and the future road writer should take was Mr. Drew Crothamel, who is currently the editor of the North Shore Sun. Helping students reach their goals in life, Rocky Points own Ms. Jeanene Gentile Executive Director of North Shore Youth Council brought her comprehensive background in the field of human health and safety services to light as a great option for a future career path.

Science is very much a part of our every day lives. Mr. Jeff Davis, Rocky Point Funeral Home owner obtained an Associates Degree in Applied Science, with a Major in Mortuary Science from SUNY Farmingdale. Mr. Davis brought to life for the students how a career in this field touches the lives of all since the beginning of time.

The field of sports offers many work-force building career opportunities.
Completing the RPCAP career brunch line up was Mr. Xristos Gaglias from Stony Brook University, Athletic Training Education Curriculum/Assistant Professor. Stepped onto the field as a true athletic trainer he spoke to the students about careers in athletic training.

The LI Works Coalition-Rocky Point Career Advisory Partnership and the Rocky Point School District are working together every day to bridge the gaps that exist between business and education. As the person representing industry I salute the entire Rocky Point School District Administration and educators for working directly with the business community in assisting student in getting a head start in exploring career options. I am extremely grateful and proud of all the business people, community residents and leaders who selflessly volunteer when asked to give freely of their time, personal experience, and expertise to help close the gaps and reasons for the exportation of our future work-force. I can not say thank you enough to the Educational Chairwoman Ms. Susan Wilson and my Industrial Co-Chairwoman Roseann Bufalino who’s continually commitment and responsible efforts are giving our children the tools they will need to make Long Island the home.
